You can play the original Nascar Racing from Sierra/Papyrus over the internet today using Kali. Kali is a program that allows you to play personal computer games over the internet. The game must be playable over an "IPX Network." The latest version of Nascar Racing (version 1.21) from Sierra/Papyrus meets this requirement for two-player games. Nascar 2 is allow 8-player IPX networking. This page details everything you need to race Nascar 1 over the internet using the Windows95 version of Kali, Kali95. If you experience persistent game performance, calibration and "lock-up" problems, please consider using the MS-DOS version of Kali.

Before trying to race Nascar with Kali IPX over the internet, you must have everything in the following checklist:
1)PRINT THIS PAGE NOW! Commit yourself to understanding the information, take your time setting it up and you will succeed. The overwhelming majority of questions we get are from users who attempt to complete a 30-minute task in five minutes.
2)Nascar version 1.21. You must have this version of Nascar. Earlier versions do not support IPX networking. If you have an earlier version, you can download the upgrade from here. This just the upgrade patch, not the entire game. Place it in your Nascar directory and run it to update the necessary files.
3)The latest version of Multi.exe, the Nascar multiplayer network program (Hawaii). While other versions of Multi.exe may work, you and your fellow racer should have the same version. To be safe, get the latest. It is available from here. Place it in your Nascar directory and run it to extract the necessary networking files.
4)The Kali IPX multiplayer gaming software available from here. The downloadable version is free and will allow you to connect for only 15 minutes at a time. For $20, you can register Kali and play Nascar and many other IPX games over the internet as long as you wish. Run kaliw95.exe to load the Kali software onto your computer.
5)28.8kbps or faster modem.
6)An understanding of chatting and gaming in Kali. Check out the info on the Kali web site, http://www.kali.net, and read the Kali help files for the best information on the Kali connection process. They explain the process far better than can be done here. If after reviewing the information you have specific questions email us.
7)Review the tips for making the most of your experience. They are there to help you
8)Tell us and others who you are. No, we won't give your email address to a mass marketer. But, we will add your name to the racer list so others can find you to schedule online races. We will also keep you informed about things that we learn so that you can make the most of you experience.

When you have all of the above, to race Nascar 1 over the internet using Kali, follow these steps:
1)Log on to the internet.
2)Make sure you understand the concept of "ping." Ping is the amount of time it takes for a message to be sent from your computer to another and returned. When playing multiplayer Nascar, you may see the term, latency. It measures the same thing. Latency = ½ Ping. A Ping of 400 ms (milliseconds) equates to a latency of .20 seconds, meaning that a signal sent from your computer takes .20 seconds to reach the other and another .20 seconds to be returned. Why do you care? Keep reading.
3)Meet your fellow racer in Kali chat on the Where To Race Kali server, the faster, the better. The ping to your fellow racer must be less than 600 ms or .60 seconds to have a playable game. The lower the ping, the greater the chance of having a good session. In a game with an opponent to which you have a high ping, the opponent's car will bounce wildly around the track. You will find the game very playable with a latency down near .20 (a ping of 400 ms). If you are fortunate enough to find an opponent to which your ping is less than 350 ms, you probably will not notice any delay.
4)Determine which racer will "Dial" and which will "Answer." The answerer will control the menus in the game. It is highly recommended that the racer with the faster computer and internet connection answer.
5)It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you and your opponent conduct your race from private "server mode" in Kali. This will prevent conflicts with other races starting at the same time.
6)While still connected to Kali, both racers run Multi.exe (not Nascar.exe) at the same time with the option "-n" for network game and any other desired options ("-h" for SVGA and/or "-f" for FM sound. (example: Multi.exe -n -h -f). -h and -f are optional depending on your preferences. -n is REQUIRED.
7)It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you configure one of your game buttons within Kali to run Nascar. To set one up select "Games" then "Configure Menu." Enter "Multi.exe" as the program, your "-" options as the arguments and the path of your Nascar directory (example: C:\Nascar) as the directory. You can run Multi.exe from the Windows95 "Start" button, selecting "Run." However, some racers have had Nascar "lock up" when running the game from the Windows95 Start button.
8)If your menus are scrolling wildly, hit the "J" key to turn off joystick menu scrolling. Your controller should still work to race, although you should probably re-calibrate it as well. The settings may be different if you are running the Windows95 version of Kali, especially if you use a Thrustmaster wheel. You may calibrate without disconnecting at any time by hitting "CTRL-J" at any menu. If the steering is persistently difficult to calibrate, review our wheel/joystick calibration page.
9)Select "Multiplayer Race" from the main Nascar menu, then "Setup." The fourth menu selection from the top will then either be "Direct Connection" or "Modem." To play a network game, it must be "Direct Connection." If it is "Modem," to change it, highlight "Modem" and hit enter. It will toggle to "Direct Connection." Once it is set to "Direct Connection," hit Esc once to go back to the Multiplayer Race menu. You should see "IPX Network" in the bottom right of the screen.
10)"Net User ID" is listed as an option. DO NOT enter anything in it. If you have previously, REMOVE IT or the game WILL NOT WORK.
11)The agreed upon dialer should select "Dial" and the answerer should select "Answer."
12)You will then see a message, of "Waiting for network user." Do just that and you should connect in less than a minute after both racers have selected.
13)The answerer is the server and controls everything, the track, the race length, the number of opponents (less than 10 is recommend and 1, the human opponent, is preferred), their strength, when to practice, when to qualify and when to race. Until the dialer is on the track, he/she is basically a passenger.
14)You can activate chat at any time by hitting "T," just like on the Hawaii network. Communicate with your fellow racer using this feature about where and how you wish to race.
15)Go racin'! But, Talladega racers take note, the distance traveled per second is the key to the latency issue. Nascar on Kali works best on shorter tracks where the cars cover less distance per second. If the best ping you can get to your opponent is at the high end of the playable range, stick to the short tracks with few or no computer opponents.
16)When finished, exit Nascar like you normally do. You will be reconnected to Kali chat.
17)If you lose the connection while racing and wish to continue, do not exit Nascar. Simply return to the Multiplayer menu and re-dial/re-answer.
